Authorities urge sober holiday driving to avoid car accidents

On Behalf of | Dec 24, 2020 | Uncategorized

For those on Kentucky roadways, there are certain times of year that are more dangerous than others. The holiday season is one such time. This is true even with the current health situation radically altering travel plans and potentially limiting family gatherings. One problem that often arises is drivers who might be under the influence. It is important to drive sober year-round, but the holidays are rife with parties and celebrations. The chances of a DUI subsequently increase. People who are in a crash should understand what they should do to protect themselves, especially if the other driver was committing a DUI.

Sober driving campaign will be in place through the new year

Statistically, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says there is a noticeable increase in DUI accidents during holiday travel. National and state regulators, legislators and law enforcement are encouraging people to drive sober. To that end, a campaign has been initiated for the middle of December through New Year’s Day. Law enforcement will be stopping vehicles if they believe the driver might be under the influence.

In the past five years during the holiday season, Kentucky had 547 accidents involving a driver who was impaired. Ten people died and 276 were injured. Not only do alcohol and drugs negatively impact a person’s reaction time, but judgment is hindered. Suggested strategies to avoid a DUI include having a plan to return home such as having a designated driver or scheduling a rideshare vehicle, a cab or public transportation. These simple steps can keep everyone safe and avoid DUI accidents.

DUIs are still likely despite safety campaigns

Even with the prominent safety campaign and facts about DUIs, it is an unfortunate reality that drivers are still likely to get behind the wheel after drinking and using drugs over the holidays. This can cause an auto accident with injuries and death. People who have been hurt or lost a loved one in a crash should be fully aware of what they may be confronted with in the aftermath.

Hospitalizations, surgical procedures, long-term treatment, medications, rehabilitation, lost time on the job and the inability to care for a family are all possible. If there is a fatality, the family left behind will deal with a host of other personal and financial concerns. The evidence that it was due to a driver committing a DUI might be essential to a successful legal filing for compensation. A law firm with experience in pursuing legal claims after auto accidents may help to navigate the complex terrain and move forward with a case.
